Outdoor learning

Outdoor learning at CIS

At the Canadian International School (CIS), outdoor learning is an integral part of our holistic approach to education. We believe that some of the most powerful learning experiences happen outside the classroom. By immersing students in authentic, real-world environments, they develop independence, resilience, collaboration, and a deep understanding of local, regional, global, and environmental issues.

Our outdoor learning programmes are designed to complement the curriculum, bringing inquiry to life through memorable, engaging, and hands-on experiences.

Why outdoor learning matters

Outdoor experiential learning empowers students to apply classroom knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts while strengthening their critical thinking, problem-solving and leadership skills. Through these experiences, students build resilience, independence and a strong sense of responsibility, while gaining cultural awareness and broader global perspectives. They also develop essential collaboration and communication skills. By engaging both the mind and body, outdoor learning nurtures a spirit of exploration and prepares students to thrive in an interconnected world.

Our outdoor learning programmes

Open minds (grades 1 to 6)

Open Minds introduces Primary students to experiential learning in real-world settings. Over the course of up to a week, students explore topics connected to the Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum and units of inquiry.

  • Hands-on experiences with artefacts and field experts
  • Opportunities to go behind the scenes in authentic learning environments
  • First-hand investigations that make concepts memorable and meaningful

This approach ensures that learning is not only understood but experienced - encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper connection to knowledge.

Excursion week (grades 4 to 11)

Each year, students from Grades 4 to 11 embark on Excursion Week, travelling within Singapore or to nearby countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Nepal.

From house building in Cambodia to supporting dental hospitals in Nepal and working with NGOs, our students learn the value of community service, empathy, and global citizenship.

Excursion Week (Grades 4 to 11)

Each year, students from Grades 4 to 11 embark on Excursion Week, travelling within Singapore or to nearby countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Nepal. Trips are tailored to students’ age levels and provide:

  • Immersive cultural, environmental, and service-oriented experiences
  • Concept-driven learning that connects directly to the curriculum
  • Opportunities for teamwork, independence, and personal growth

From house building in Cambodia to supporting dental hospitals in Nepal and working with NGOs, our students learn the value of community service, empathy, and global citizenship.

Field Trips Across Grade Levels

Throughout the year, students participate in field trips that bring learning to life. Whether it’s exploring Singapore’s biodiversity, visiting museums, or engaging with local experts, each trip strengthens classroom learning and broadens perspectives.

Diploma Programme (DP) Fieldwork

Fieldwork is a critical part of the IB Diploma Programme at CIS and contributes directly to students’ coursework and internal assessments.

  • Expands, reinforces, and applies classroom concepts
  • Builds investigative, analytical, and organisational skills
  • Makes learning relevant, engaging, and applicable to real-world contexts

Through this process, students not only deepen subject knowledge but also refine transferable skills essential for academic and professional success.

Preparing Students for the Real World

CIS outdoor learning programmes go beyond traditional academics. They challenge students to step outside their comfort zones, work collaboratively, and engage with diverse cultures and communities. The result is a transformative educational journey that builds confident, compassionate, and globally minded individuals.
