When choosing a school for our children, we wanted to look above and beyond online rankings. Having a clear vision of what we wanted for them was important to us. Our top priorities were language, particularly English and Chinese, and a learning style that would allow our children to grow into global citizens. We visited around nine different campuses before making our decision, and CIS stood out for its IB-inspired approach in the early years and its unique bilingual programme.

The ultimate deciding factor, however, was our children’s experience during the campus tour. They loved the vibrant classrooms, where an art teacher invited them to join an activity, as well as the exciting facilities, including the award-winning Outdoor Discovery Centre (ODC). They had such a wonderful time that they made the final decision themselves to attend CIS, and we were happy to respect their choice.

Looking back, choosing CIS was a fantastic decision for our family. Both children have grown here and embraced English almost immediately. We have also been very impressed by their progress in Chinese. Our son started from scratch, but through the school’s curriculum, his skills developed to the point where he could confidently deliver a two-minute speech by the end of Grade 1. The language expertise of the teachers is so impressive, and it has been wonderful to see his progress.

One thing I particularly appreciate about CIS is its International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum integrated with a highly effective bilingual programme. The 50:50 immersion model, where the language of instruction alternates completely every day, is remarkable. It gives our children the opportunity to develop their skills in both English and Chinese as part of their everyday learning.

Our children love cultural events and making friends from diverse backgrounds. These experiences naturally open their minds to the world. They also enjoy the school’s facilities and look forward to sports and the various extracurricular activities (ECAs). From the nature-rich ODC and swimming lessons starting at age two to student musicals at the DFT Theatre, there are so many opportunities for them to explore different interests. They enjoy the campus so much that they are happy to stay and play even after dismissal!

As a family experiencing life overseas for the first time, we were especially grateful for the care the school provided during our children’s transition. The teachers communicated closely with me and made sure our children felt safe and included from day one. Their support and individual attention helped make the transition smooth and joyful.

The teachers and staff are approachable, welcoming, and always ready to listen. This positive experience inspired me to become a class parent and Japanese community representative. Although CIS has a large campus and excellent resources, what makes it special to us is its warm, home-like, and inclusive environment, where every family can feel connected.

For parents who are trying to choose a school, my advice would be not to rely only on online rankings or what others say. I highly recommend visiting campuses with your children. Seeing the teachers and students firsthand helps you understand whether the school aligns with your family’s values and whether it is the right environment for your children.

For our family, CIS has been a wonderful choice. We value the balance between learning and having fun, the bilingual programme, the enthusiasm of the teachers, and the welcoming community. Most importantly, we are happy to see our children enjoying school, making friends, and developing their skills and confidence along the way.
