Excursions
Experiential learning beyond the classroom: Global excursions for Grades 4-11
At the heart of a holistic education lies the belief that the world is our greatest classroom. Our progressive excursion programme is designed to take students from Grades 4 through 11 on a journey of discovery, moving from foundational cultural awareness to deep global engagement.
Through these immersive, curriculum-aligned trips, students don’t just learn about the world—they experience it.
Primary and middle years: building foundations (Grades 4-8)
These excursions connect classroom learning with meaningful real-world experiences. Each trip is carefully aligned with the curriculum so that every destination strengthens conceptual understanding while fostering curiosity, confidence, and a growing sense of responsibility for the world around us.
Students explore diverse Southeast Asian environments through focused learning experiences:
Cultural Immersion & Language: Developing language proficiency and intercultural understanding in Xiamen.
Ecology & Sustainability: Investigating biodiversity and environmental stewardship in Malacca, Bintan, Telunas, Kuching, and Rompin.
These early experiences play an essential role in developing the independence and resilience students need for more complex international travel in later years. Beyond academic growth, the journeys are intentionally designed to build adaptability, collaboration, and responsible decision-making. Students learn to navigate unfamiliar environments with confidence and reflect on their role as emerging global citizens — key dispositions that support success in more advanced learning experiences ahead.
This progression aligns naturally with the inquiry-driven approach of the IB framework at CIS, reinforcing that meaningful learning extends beyond the classroom.
Senior years: Deepening global engagement (Grades 9-11)
As students enter the upper grades, the focus shifts toward Global Citizenship and hands-on impact. Our excursions for Grades 9–11 challenge students to engage with complex social and environmental issues across the globe.
Immersive Destinations
From the vibrant landscapes of Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos to the cultural heritage of Spain, France, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, students participate in high-impact initiatives, including:
- Community Service: Working alongside local communities on sustainable development projects.
- Environmental Technology: Implementing green solutions like reforestation, eco-construction, and biogas technology.
- Cultural Exploration: Developing a sophisticated understanding of global histories and perspectives.
These early experiences are vital for building the independence and resilience necessary for more complex international travel in later years.
Why experiential learning matters
Our multi-day excursions are more than just trips; they are a cornerstone of holistic student development. By stepping outside their comfort zones, students cultivate the essential "soft skills" required for success in the 21st century:
Skills | Growth Area |
|---|---|
| Independence | Managing personal responsibilities in new environments. |
| Collaboration | Working in diverse teams to solve real-world problems. |
| Resilience | Overcoming physical and mental challenges through outdoor exploration. |
| Global Awareness | Understanding the interconnectedness of ecology, economy, and culture. |
By the time our students graduate, they are not just academically proficient; they are thoughtful, responsible global citizens prepared to navigate and contribute to an increasingly complex world.
