Phase 2 Foundation programme

What is the Foundation Programme?

The Secondary Foundation Programme is an intensive English fast-track course designed for students in Grades 7–9 who need additional language before joining the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). In this short, one-year programme (one or two semesters), students rapidly build the language and academic skills.

CIS Foundation Programme

Over half of our students graduate after their first semester (five months), and an impressive 98.5% complete the programme within the full academic year. The course not only strengthens English proficciency across all core subjects but also builds confidence, independence, and readiness for international school life.

Students engage with MYP core subjects through a scaffolded English language curriculum that builds both subject understanding and academic language for a smooth transition to the MYP, this includes:

  • English Literature and Language
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Individuals & Societies (I&S – history, geography, and social studies)
  • Physical Education

Students also have full access to all extracurricular activities offered across the school, allowing them to participate fully in school life and develop their interests beyond the classroom.

How do students learn?

Our classes are usually 15 students with a maximum of 18, with specialist teachers who understand how to support students learning in a second language.

Learning combines clear instruction with inquiry-based activities. This means students not only learn facts but also practise questioning, investigating, and making connections which are key skills for success in the IB.

Sample school day

Students follow a full timetable where grammar and vocabulary instruction are embedded within subject learning, alongside SMART time (clubs, creative activities, and sports), assemblies, and after-school activities. SMART time and CCAs are whole-school programmes, giving Foundation students full access to all activities and the opportunity to make friends with students from different grades and nationalities, while further developing their language skills through authentic, real-world interaction.
