Husky Stories: Gymnast Karin U. raises the bar
By CIS Communications
From winning six gold medals in a single competition season to competing at Level 8 of gymnastics in Singapore, a level reached by very few gymnasts her age, Grade 6 student Karin U. has had an exceptional year in sport.
In gymnastics, athletes perform routines on four different apparatus: Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise. Each event tests different skills such as strength, balance, coordination, and precision. The All-Around title is awarded based on the combined scores from all four events, showing success across the entire competition.
At the 17th Singapore Gymnastics National Championships 2026, Karin earned 1st place on Uneven Bars and 3rd place All-Around. Representing Canadian International School at FOBISIA, she achieved 1st place on Uneven Bars, 3rd place on Vault, and 2nd place All-Around. Her success continued at the Lion City Classic 2026, where she claimed one of her best performances of the season:
- 1st place – Uneven Bars
- 1st place – Balance Beam
- 1st place – All-Around
- 3rd place – Vault
- 3rd place – Floor
In total, she has won six gold medals this season, alongside several silver and bronze medals, with two more competitions still ahead this year.
Karin first discovered gymnastics at the age of six after a friend invited her to join a class, and the sport quickly became one of her greatest passions. "Gymnastics has helped me become more confident in myself and it has become one of my favourite activities that I enjoy," she shared.
Today, she trains five times a week. She focuses on building her routines, strength, and flexibility, and is always looking to improve herself. "I repeat my skills many times so I can do them better and better and feel more confident during competitions."
One of Karin’s favourite events is Uneven Bars, where she has achieved many of her strongest results. "I love when I make my whole bar routine without any falls. That makes me really happy."
Inspired by Simone Biles, Karin admires not only her strength and talent but also her understanding of the importance of rest and self-care. A quote that keeps her motivated is: "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard." It reminds her that perseverance and effort are just as important as natural ability.
Looking back on her season, Karin shared, "I’m really happy about my results and I learned a lot from each competition." With two competitions still to come this year, she hopes to continue building on her success.
Well done, Karin! Go Huskies!
