In order to help someone going through a cancer treatment, Lakeside Grade 5 student Jieqing (Selina) donated one of her most treasured possessions, her long hair. She had her hair cut in front of her class on Tuesday, September 13. She was nervous as this would be the first time in her life that she would have short hair, but the fact that she was helping a person battling cancer made her feel good, and that it was worth it.

Selina got the idea of donating her hair when she was in Grade 4. Her mother read an article to her about a boy whose friends made fun of his long hair. His friends didn’t know that he was growing his hair so that he could donate it to people who were undergoing cancer treatment and had lost their own hair. Once she reached Grade 5, Selina spoke with her teacher, Ms. Tremblay, about this, and what she had to do to make such a donation. After searching online, they found a website recycleyourhair.blogspot.sg, run by a local woman who collects hair donations in Singapore, and turns them into wigs for patients in need.

Although Selina misses her long hair and can’t wait for it to grow back, she is happy that she decided to be a caring risk taker, and was able to help someone going through such a difficult time!
