As part of their “Save The World” unit, grade 9 Spanish students created and developed an environmental campaign to help a Spanish school in Malaga (Spain) raise environmental awareness. Students, after learning about it in class, were inspired by the environmental campaigns in different parts of the Spanish-speaking world. Their goal was to incorporate a meaningful service project into their lesson.

After connecting with CEIP Doctor Fleming (a bilingual school in Spain), the students were divided into 3 groups to analyse 3 different areas that concern students in Malaga:

  1. students’ environmental impact in their daily routines

  2. main environmental issues in their school

  3. challenges in their respective neighbourhood/city.

The grade 9 students discovered some very different environmental and social concerns due to Malaga’s unique demographics and geography, thanks to a survey that was sent to Malaga to gather student responses. For instance, they were surprised to find out about the graffiti pollution and seagull problems along the coast—which is uncommon in Singapore.

After careful analysis and consideration, the grade 9 students created bilingual posters to raise awareness about issues they consider to be the Spanish students’ main concern. These issues include saving water, graffiti/toxic gases and overuse of air-conditioning. The posters are now on display at CEIP Doctor Fleming, but it doesn’t mean that the project has ended.

In fact, the grade 9 students are still continuing the conversation by advocating for the creation of an association that’s similar to the Green Machine initiative in CIS in Malaga. Their goal: to raise awareness about saving our world and to ensure that concrete action is implemented within the school environment and locally. Isn’t it wonderful to see these grade 9 Spanish students displaying such admirable leadership skills and initiative throughout the entire process?
