It was chess time for aspiring chess masters at the Lakeside campus on Saturday 5 May! Students from both Lakeside and TK campuses participated in this informal competition, which for many was their first ever chess tournament. Those new to competition chess had a truly enriching experience, as the environment simulated formal competitions that use a chess clock to time their moves, and gave students the opportunity to learn more about illegal moves. These new skills and knowledge gained will help them prepare for other future competitions, which can otherwise feel very intimidating for new competitors.

This was the first individual chess tournament hosted by CIS at Lakeside. We couldn’t have done it without the chess coaches from Checkmate who helped facilitate the event. Congratulations to all students who challenged themselves and participated in the event. The final tournament results are:

Grade 1 to 3

  1. Luomin Zhao - gold medal
  2. Jeffrey Zefeng Ren - silver medal
  3. Billy Binglin Luan - bronze medal

Grade 4 and above

  1. Aditya Sriram - gold medal
  2. Felix Li - silver medal
  3. Leyi Zhang - bronze medal
