Working and Living in Singapore
Living considerations
Singapore is one of the world’s most dynamic, safe, and liveable cities — making it an exciting destination for international educators and professionals.
Housing and cost of living
Accommodation is typically the largest living expense in Singapore. While rentals in central areas and private condominiums can be higher, many neighbourhoods offer a balance of affordability, convenience, and accessibility.
Most CIS staff choose to live near the campus in Singapore’s West area, though some commute from other parts of the island. Your housing allowance is designed to adequately cover rent and utilities.
There are two main housing types:
- Public Housing (HDB)
- Private Housing (most common for expatriates)
Popular property search platforms include PropertyGuru, Rent in Singapore, and iProperty. To live close to CIS, we recommend searching in Jurong, Clementi, Bukit Timah, and Holland Village.
Healthcare
Singapore offers world-class healthcare across both public and private hospitals. Many healthcare professionals are internationally trained, and private clinics are conveniently located throughout residential areas.
CIS provides local medical insurance coverage for eligible staff, ensuring access to high-quality healthcare services.
Transport
Singapore’s public transport system — MRT, buses, and taxis — is efficient, reliable, and well-connected. Many residents find they do not need a car, as congestion and vehicle ownership costs are high.
