A SPECIAL GIFT TO CAMBODIA
Last year, when CIS student, Luc Parrot, was in Senior Kindergarten, he organised a large collection of toys from his classmates (with the big help of his then-teacher, Ms. Tina Peers). The toys were collected in June 2008 and donated to the small school that his grandmother opened as part of her humanitarian work in the extremely impoverished neighbourhood of Klang Leu, in Sihanoukville (town on the coast of Cambodia). Luc’s grandmother opened this day care centre so that little ones could be taken care of in a secure and clean environment while the mothers were working and the older brothers and sisters were attending school. Before the opening of this centre, the older brothers and sisters could not go to school because they had to take care of their younger siblings.
During a recent visit to his grandparents, Luc brought the toys to the day care centre and donated them to the kids. He also gave a brief speech and explained to the children (with the help of a translator), what his schoolmates back in Singapore had done for them. Here are two photos of Luc's presentation (with his grandmother on the right and the translator on the left) and a group picture. Later, the children created a mini-concert with an exchange of Khmer and French songs. Then the kids played with all the toys and Luc and his sister, Emma, discovered that children in Cambodia and in Singapore like to play the same games: dolls, legos, cars, tea sets, and building blocks!
We are very proud of Luc and of the contribution of his former SK classmates. If you would like to know more about how you might support the work of the day care centre, please contact Cecile Parrot at cecile_collineau@hotmail.com
