"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." - Pablo Picasso

At CIS, we are committed to the development of the whole child, and believe that children need to be able to express themselves through a variety of creative outlets. We strive to give our students a comprehensive education to face the demands of the 21st century - one which will enable them to draw on all of the frameworks of thought, tools and methods of the sciences, mathematics and the arts. Each discipline offers another lens with which to interpret the world and no one discipline alone offers a full picture. Tomorrows' problem solvers will need to draw creatively and flexibly on multiple frames of thought.

Art benefits the development of children's creativity, imagination and cognitive skills. Critical thinking, flexible problem solving, and the transfer of new skills and knowledge for use in new situations will be the learning that will be of the most value to our students. Art develops these capacities and offers powerful opportunities for learning and self expression. The arts are good for you.

In class, visual arts instruction includes elements of design, art interpretation, and the development of art techniques in a variety of media. Art experiences are an integral part of learning for our younger students in the classroom. For young children in particular, art is a means of representing their understanding symbolically when they are not yet able to express themselves as independent readers and writers. In the PYP, students work on projects that are connected to their units of inquiry. MYP students work regularly with visual arts specialists and students in Grades 11 and 12 have art electives to select from. ECA opportunities outside the classroom, where students can further their love of art include: art club, cartoon drawing club, school of design, digital art club, arts and crafts club, and mural club.  We believe that children who enter CIS bring with them the capacity to express themselves creatively through art. A walk through our buildings and classrooms is a testament to this.

Here is some of our student artwork from this year's yearbooks.
