At CIS, excursion week (called CASA week at Jurong East - Middle School) is an opportunity to experience meaningful learning and helps students on their journey to becoming informed, purposeful, and active global citizens.
For younger students (grade 4 to 8), each excursion relates to a focus of inquiry. Being outside the traditional boundaries of the classroom gives students the opportunity to use inquiry, the learning process that is the foundation of the IB programme, to further their understanding of people, community and global issues, artifacts and objects. This powerful hands on, minds on learning is relevant, enjoyable, and exciting for students.
In addition to the educational benefits of excursion week, and in line with our commitment to develop the whole child, students have the opportunity to obtain key insights into themselves and experience profound emotional growth. They also learn the importance of co-existing with others and develop a deeper understanding of their peers, friends and teachers.
High school students venture to Vietnam, Cambodia, Northern India and Malaysia for excursion week, and the main emphasis in these grades is: personal challenge, international mindedness, understanding and experiencing community service, and understanding how any contribution, no matter how small can make a difference in the world. All students in grade 10 visit Vietnam, where they travel together to Hanoi for the first night, after which students have the choice of: experiencing art and culture, an activities and adventure based endeavour, or a community service project. Students in grade 12 choose between three trips: building houses, visiting orphanages and schools in Cambodia; trekking through the North Indian province of Ladakh, and taking part in numerous community service projects; exploring the Malaysian jungle and taking part in a community service project. Excursion week encourages our students to reflect on the world and how they can make a difference.
