The International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB DP) programme was born, in the 1960s, of efforts to establish a common curriculum and university entry credential for students moving from one country to another. International educators were motivated by practical considerations but also by an idealistic vision that students should share an academic experience that would emphasize critical thinking, intercultural understanding and exposure to a variety of points of view.
The IB DP is a demanding pre-university course of study that leads to examinations. It is designed for highly motivated secondary school students aged 16 to 19 years. To be awarded the IB Diploma, a student must demonstrate a strong commitment to learning, in terms of mastery of subject content and in the development of skills and attitudes necessary for success at the tertiary level. The IB Diploma is held in high esteem throughout the world and the student who is awarded the IB Diploma gains access to the world's leading universities. The IB DP is a comprehensive two-year international curriculum that generally allows students to fulfill the requirements of their national or state education systems. The IB DP incorporates the best elements of national systems, without being based on any one.

The IB Diploma curriculum seeks to provide a holistic education whereby candidates reflect their roles as responsible and compassionate local community members and global citizens. The CAS programme at CIS encourages students to learn about and share their expertise and talents with others as well as to consider how businesses can give back their communities. Students are encouraged to self-reflect on their endeavours to gain insightful knowledge about themselves and others that will foster a desire to be life-long learners and generous souls.

This interdisciplinary requirement is intended for students to critically reflect on how knowledge is constructed and communicated. This course challenges students to analyse

and appraise evidence that often supports or organizes a rational argument. Thus, TOK is an interdisciplinary link of the IB Diploma Programme and is taught once a week over the two year curriculum at CIS.
